Buying and Running a Dunkin Donut Franchise

In the annual top 500 most successful franchises in 2007, Dunkin Donut ranked second place. Dunkin Donut is one of the world’s most known restaurants specialized in quick service coffee and baked goods. It was founded back in 1950 by William Roseburg and its main office is in Quincy, Massachusetts.

But the Dunkin Donut restaurants does not limit themselves only to coffee and donuts, their product list also contains omelets, iced lattes, breakfast sandwiches, hot and cold beverages (hot chocolate, ice tea, smoothies). The brand is constantly developing and enlarging their business in the United States with a rather aggressive strategy. There combination stores and outlet re-sales can be found across the country.

Dunkin Donut has been offering franchises since 1955, five years after their first shop opened. They have locations both in the United States, and also abroad. The number of locations in the US is above 4800, while there are more than 1700 in other countries (Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Kuwait, and Taiwan). Their main goal is to reach 15,000 locations in the US by the year 2016.

The costs and fees for opening a Dunkin Donut franchise are as followed:

The main company requires its newly opened franchisees to have a minimum net worth of $1.5 million, while for re-sales, the financial requirements are set by the existing franchises.

In exchange for the franchise fee, the franchisor assumes the role of training the franchisee’s personnel. Average annual revenue per store is in excess of $850,000.

The Dunkin Donut franchise is not for everybody. It is addressed to people with previous experience in running fast-foods/restaurants (at least three years experience in managing such a business or five years experience in managing people in any kind of business environment) and who have a certain level of financial power (minimum $750,000 in liquid assets and a net worth of minimum 1.5 million dollars). Besides the financial requirements, there also is an "English Language Proficiency Assessment" which has to be passed before one can open a Dunkin Donut franchise.
